When and where was Firehouse Quilts started?
Firehouse Quilts started in Highlands Ranch, Colorado in August 2003 after realizing our local fire department did not have a quilt program for the children they see on the emergency runs.
Is Firehouse Quilts a nonprofit group?
Yes, in 2005 we incorporated in the State of Colorado as a Firehouse Quilts of Colorado, Inc.
Who is eligible to receive your quilts?
Any fire department in the state of Colorado is eligible to receive quilts and county social service organizations. A list of who receives our quilts can be found here.
Do you charge the recipients for the quilts?
No, there is no monetary charge for the quilts at all. They are donated with the hopes that the children receiving the quilts will get a sense of love and safety from them. We do ask for the opportunity to take a picture when our FHQ volunteers deliver the quilts. These pictures are used in our blog posts and on Facebook.
Do you accept donations?
Yes!
We accept the following fabric donations:
- 100% cotton fabric only
- Fat quarter size or larger (18 x 22″)
- Prints and solids
- Fleece fabric, one yard minimum
- Minky fabric, three yard minimum (enough for a 45″ x 45″ quilt back)
- NO knits, polyester, upholstery fabrics, stretchy fabric, thin/see-through fabric, dress-making fabric, etc. as this cannot be used in our quilts.
We DO NOT accept magazines or notions except for rotary blades and cotton thread.
Because of limited time and space, we only accept fabric donations by appointment only. Please contact us to arrange a date and time.
If you have fabric that we cannot accept, please consider donating to Warm Hearts, Warm Babies or another organization in the area.
We accept cash, check, and credit card donations through PayPal. You do not need a PayPal account to make a donation.
We also have an Amazon Smile account. AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favorite charitable organization every time you shop, at no cost to you. When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to Firehouse Quilts.
What size quilts do you accept?
Common quilt sizes for the various organizations that we support are 45″ x 45″ snuggle quilts, 36″ x 36″ small quilts, 50″ x 70″ lap quilts, and 40″ x 50″ wheelchair quilts. These measurements do not need to be exact, except for the width of the wheelchair quilts, which must be exact, so it does not get caught in the wheels. Click here for more specific guidelines.
